CAL-Xtra by Konke's Own provides a concentrated source of bone minerals to make up shortfalls in grain and grass hay based diets and for all horses in training.  It is especially useful for horses consuming tropical pastures or hays where calcium uptake is reduced by oxalate compounds in the pasture and hay.

Oxalate compounds bind calcium, reducing its availability, which can lead to an artificially induced calcium deficiency, which increases the risk of shifting lameness, bone fracture and in severe cases can lead to a disease called Nutritional Secondary Hyperparathyroidism (NSH), commonly known as ‘Big Head’.

• Contains a concentrated source of bone minerals – calcium, phosphorus and magnesium in an optimum ratio to correct low or inadequate levels in the diet.

• Acidified formulation to facilitate calcium uptake from the small intestine.

• Contains vitamins A & D which have roles in the regulation of calcium absorption and utilisation, required for the growth and maintenance of bone.

• Adhering low dust formulation for minimum wastage in feed.

Cal-Xtra is alos recommended for horses on longterm ulcer medication, which can inhibit calcium uptake from the small intestine, leaving them prone to bone fractures in long term training. TheAcid Salt in Cal-Xtra ensure adequate uptake of calcium.

Ingredients

Dosage (scoop contains 50g)

High Grain diets (4-5kg of grain per day) - give 37.5g  per 250kg of body weight daily

Horses Spelling on grass based pasture - 50g per 250kg of body weight daily for the first 4 weeks and there after 25g per 250kg of body weight daily

Horses spelling on tropical grass dominant pasture (eg kikuya, panic, seteria)- 37.5 g per 200kg of body weight daily or alternatively 75g per 200kg of body weight every 3rd day

Reduce the amount of Cal-Xtra you give to your horse by 12.5g for every 1kg of lucerne you feed your horse.

Kohnke's Handy Hints:

Mix CAL-Xtra well into the hard feed once per day. To avoid the effects of reduced calcium uptake due to oxalate binding in horses grazing tropical grass/high oxalate pastures, the hard feed and any lucerne/legume hay should be provided in a bin or yard where practical, so as to avoid horses mixing oxalates from mouthfuls of pasture with supplemented calcium in the hard feed under paddock conditions. .
